Today for the first time I got at least a portion of each kit down on the floor, just to start to get a sense of how this was actually going to come together. The good news: it does seem like it's actually going to come together!
Behind the street frontage on the right, you can see two Butterwick House kits, which are going to form the galleried part of the galleried coaching inn. Then there'll be another arch, one of only two kits that aren't from Petite Properties. The other I can't even really call a kit as it is the carriage house in the lower left corner of the picture, which I got used on eBay and then heavily "renovated." But more on that later. Beyond the arch in the outer yard will be a Hobbler's Loft kit, serving as stables and that second kitchen I keep talking about, and then an additional stable building.
You can start to get a sense of what the frontage is going to look like. I haven't put on any of the timber frame trim yet, though. I want to get everything further along just in case I change my mind on colors. Namely, I can't decide whether I want the two houses to have the same color plaster and timber, or have Tanglewood Hall have a more contrasting set of colors (Traveller's Rest is already pretty well locked in because I had to do the coachway timbers.
And yes I couldn't resist seeing what it looked like with an actual stagecoach in front! I had been hoping that my Brumm models would fit, but they are 1:43 and just looked too huge compared to it. I was fortunate to find Matchbox did a 1:48 stagecoach, though, so I picked up one of those.
As you can see by the tape measure in the picture, I'm trying to get a sense of overall measurement so I can decide on what I'm going to do for the base. Right now I am still leaning towards doing a turntable, but my original plan to get one of the electrified turntables is limited in that the Herdwick lights/fireplaces can only go about 5 to one coin battery, and putting them on something stronger wasn't recommended. So I think I am going to get a 12th scale regular turntable base and then do a series of quarter scale lighting drawers all glued together on top of it. That should allow it to still turn but provide access to each individual house's lighting.
